we've really had a ball these past 5 years. It's
very informal with lots of singing. You don't HAVE
to have choral experience to enjoy yourself.
Singing always makes you feel good and doing it
with like minded people makes you feel even
better!! Last years master classes with Carol were
a BIG hit. They're sort of like eave dropping on a
specific music lesson. That really puts the
"theory" into a more relevant context. We perform a
VERY informal concert followed by an open stage -
mostly for ourselves though we make a CD which
sounds pretty damn good considering the amount of
practice time! Anyone who have been to the grounds
at Eaglewood will remember how beautiful the site
is, aaaaand it's still too early for bugs!!

sing with Tom Leighton??? Join us for:
Sing
5 at
Eaglewood,
Pfferlaw,
Ont with Tom
Leighton and
Carol
Hasek.. This
excellent choral weekend is organized by
Margaret
Almack and
we've really had a ball these past 4 years. It's
very informal with lots of singing. You don't HAVE
to have choral experience to enjoy yourself.
Singing always makes you feel good and doing it
with like minded people makes you feel even
better!! Last years master classes with Carol were
a BIG hit. They're sort of like eave dropping on a
specific music lesson. That really puts the
"theory" into a more relevant context. We perform a
VERY informal concert followed by an open stage -
mostly for ourselves though we make a CD which
sounds pretty damn good considering the amount of
practice time! Anyone who have been to the grounds
at Eaglewood will remember how beautiful the site
is aaaaand it's still too early for bugs!!

Utah Phillips
(http://www.utahphillips.org) is a labor organizer,
folk singer, storyteller, and poet who has been a
major supporter of social causes for decades.
Phillips has become an elder statesman for the folk
and labour music community and a keeper of stories
and songs that might otherwise have passed into
obscurity. Utah not only entertains and enlightens,
but also tells of the struggle of labor unions and
speaks to the power of direct action. Utah has long
been a member of the Industrial Workers of the
World. His heart beats with a fierce love for all
people and all good causes - especially
peace.
Now
Utah is in
need. Due to congestive
heart failure, he is unable to travel, making it
impossible to follow his trade as a singer of songs
and a teller of tales. The doctors have closed him
down. An international grassroots movement of
friends and fans is actively fundraising to help
Utah and have unofficially proclaimed December 2007
as "Utah Phillips Month". Many venue owners and
other activists are planning benefit concerts
andother fundraising events leading up to the
holiday season of giving. The Toronto concert will
be one of many events occurring across Canada and
the United States, and it will be one of the best.
The evening will bring you a splendid line-up of
acoustic and folk artists who have known Utah and
his work over the years, as well as younger singers
who live the principles that Utah
embodies.
Tickets are $22 dollars in
advance and $25 dollars at the door. Any
contributions over and above will, of course, be
welcomed. Checks for Utah will be collected on site
and forwarded directly to him.

26th, the ninth Dare the Devil program at
Hughs Room, Anne is joined by
Jamie Snider
and Kim
Vincent as
well as a special appearance by
soon-to-be-leaving-Toronto fiddler
Erynn
Marshall.
The regular house band is the musical phenomenon
that is Tom
Leighton
(keyboard,
accordion and bodhran all at once!) and master
guitarist
Ian
Bell.
Jaime
Sniders
fiddling is one-half Saturday night square dance
(at least as heard in Matawatchan, Ontario in the
1950s) and one-half the older tradition as learned
from legendary players such as Emile Benoit and
Rufus Guinchard (Newfoundland), Leo Browne (Ottawa
and Ireland) and Ambrose Gannon of Low, Quebec.
Snider was a founding member of Figgy Duff, a
member of the legendary Wonderful Great Band of
Newfoundland which enjoyed three television
seasons, and now plays with The Puffins. He can be
heard on soundtracks for two Global Television
productions, Blackfly and Antique
Hunter plus a McCains juice
commercial featuring a lithe young maiden fiddling
from a rooftop. Jamies original compositions
include pieces that are now Maritime and
Newfoundland standards: Babylon Mall,
U.I.C., Evangeline and
Paddy When You Die. Signed copies of
Sniders Dance Music of Canada
Book I, a collection of 340 rare tunes and
settings from the Canadian dance tradition, will be
available for the first time at Hughs
Room.
Kim
Vincent
provides an opportunity to hear genuine Irish
fiddling of the County Sligo style. Sligo music is
fast with driving rhythm and plenty of
ornamentation by the left hand. Vincent learned
from the best mentors in New Brunswick, Halifax and
Prince County on PEI, including the great Eddie
Poirier. These were the musicians who preserved the
old ways while othersmoved to more commercial
styles. A superb family event featuring traditions
which are an irrepressible expression of the human
spirit, the voice of fiddling will continue to grow
at Dare the Devil.

Leighton and Carol
Hasek.. This
excellent choral weekend is organized by
Margaret
Almack and
we've really had a ball these past 3 years. It's
very informal with lots of singing. You don't HAVE
to have choral experience to enjoy yourself.
Singing always makes you feel good and doing it
with like minded people makes you feel even
better!! Last years master classes with Carol were
a BIG hit. They're sort of like eave dropping on a
specific music lesson. That really puts the
"theory" into a more relevant context. We perform a
VERY informal concert followed by an open stage -
mostly for ourselves. Anyone who have been to the
grounds at Eaglewood will remember how beautiful
the site is aaaaand it's still too early for
bugs!! Here is Margeret's address for more

Hasek.. This
excellent choral weekend is organized by
Margaret
Almack and
we've really had a ball these past 2 years. It's
quite informal with lots of singing. You don't HAVE
to have choral experience to enjoy yourself.
Singing always makes you feel good and doing it
with like minded people makes you feel even
better!! Last years master classes with Carol were
a BIG hit. They're sort of like eave dropping on a
specific music lesson. That really puts the
"theory" into a more relevant context. We perform a
VERY informal concert followed by an open stage -
mostly for ourselves. Tom will plan on recording
the night again. Everyone enjoyed the results of
last years CD. Here is Margeret's address for more

the
Wexford
Variety
Night.
This show is the "annual coming out party" for the
Wexford Music Theatre Comnpany - of 150 students
including our own pit orchestra. With those numbers
we stage numbers in a way that even Los Vegas could
NEVER afford to do. It's a real variety show with
lots of BIG numbers that you have to see and hear
to believe, plus a fast paced grou0p of smaller
numbers and skits that give the maximum amount of
stage time to our students and solidify the
"company" prior to working on the annual musical.

Show
time is at

excellent choral weekend was and is organized by
Margaret Almack and we really had a ball last year.
It's quite informal with lots of singing. You don't
HAVE to have choral experience to enjoy yourself.
Singing always makes you feel good and doing it
with like minded people makes you feel even
better!! This year we're planning on doing a bit
less material thank last year and allowing Carol
and all of us to enjoy polishing it up a bit more.
Also we're planning on having master classes which
is sort of like eave dropping on a specific music
lesson. That really puts the "theory" into a more
relevant context. Here is Margeret's address for

have been asked to celebrate at
"HUGH'S

It's one of Toronto's best venues - 2261 Dundas

like we'll start the festivities with a rip roaring
Haines &
Leighton
concert set, then devote the rest of the night to
"party music" and requests with guests sitting in.
We are thrilled to have two of our favorite Toronto
musicians playign with us that night - on drums and
some guitar we have
Mitch
Lewis (Mitch
is featured on our "Hand To Hand" CD and also was a
member of
Mark Haines
and the
Zippers so
is more than qualified to play in ANY musical
direction the night takes us) and
Conrad
Kipping on
Fiddle, mandolin and guitars (Conrad plays with Tom
in many pubs around Toronto, especially when Mark
is on the Island, but we have slao worked many
times as a trio - or as
Michael
Bolton
worded it - as "two of Toronto's best
duos!")
